The Keys Come Hyme (Traditional English) Mentioned in Albert Sharps 'The Bishoprick Garland' 1834
A song from my home place, the North East of England. A mother awaits the return of her only child, a son, as the cows come home for milking and he does not appear. He roams free and his father is sent to look for him. I was one of the last generations to play 'outside' and where I wanted, for as long as I wanted. I returned home, with my dog Lassie, when I was hungry and usually before it went dark. I remember my Mammy saying
“Bairn!, bairn! Where were you?” as I came in at dusk after a day playing outside across the fields and in the woods. It was safe then to wander alone, with my dog, for hours. Times have changed. This is a romantic view of childhood and parenthood, and the treasures collected by the child cover too many seasons perhaps?
